Charlie and Max - Rough Story

Charlie and Max

Charlie (Older Brother): scared of mice, vegetarian, determined, picky, annoyed

Max (Younger): greedy, sneaky, adorable, glutton, prankster, devious

Outline-

-Charlie goes to eat his dinner, a bowl of fruit and veggies.

-Max scoots his way into the scene, a mouse dangling from his beak.   (He holds it by the tail)

-Charlie looks over and shudders at the “dead” vermin.

-Max tries to offer it to his older brother by throwing it right next to him.

-Startling Charlie, he quickly kicks it off the tree branch and both, with shocked/curious expressions, watch it fall down below.

-Charlie slowly looks at Max, who is about to pitch a fit because he was trying to offer his food up to his brother.

-Now feeling bad, Charlie flies down to retrieve the “dead” mouse that he’s deathly afraid of even touching.

-Charlie waits for a moment, inspecting the mouse before taking small side steps to get near it.

-Charlie takes the branch and beats the hell out of the mouse.

-Charlie finally climbs up the tree with the dead mouse dangling from his mouth.

-Max stands off to the side, away from the empty bark, smacking his beak, embracing the taste of the delicious fruit.

-Charlie throws the mouse in front of him with disgust.  He nods to him to take it.

-Max, happily takes the mouse and quickly hurries off with it.

-Charlie shakes his head and turns back to the bowl.  Realizing that the contents are missing, turns his head towards the little brother who is now long gone.

Charlie stares longingly at the precious mound of fruit that lay atop the bark of the tree.  Along the length of the branch that he stands on, a little owl with devious eyes enters in, taking one side step at a time towards his older brother.  Within his beak, he holds a lifeless, dangling rodent from its tail.  It swings from side to side with each step he takes.

Charlie turns to look at Max with a dark stare.  Max manages a grin as he swings the mouse towards his direction, watching it flop onto the branch inches away from Charlie’s claws.  Charlie ruffles up in quick response as his whole body jerks backward and tenses.  His foot juts out and swings around to pelt the dead mouse off the branch.  Retracting his claw back as close as he can tuck it into his body, they both stretch their necks out and glance down to see where the mouse had landed.  Charlie cautiously sets his foot down, glancing over at Max who looks back at him with a pout.  It was his food offering to his brother that he had worked so hard to get.

Max glances slowly down at his feet and sighs heavily.  Rolling his eyes back at the dramatics, he sighs as well. Feeling a bit sorry, for the young feeble one, he gestures to him to give him a minute while he goes down to retrieve the hideous vermin.  Leaping off the branch, he swoops down leaving Max up above to take a sneaking glance at his brother’s fruit platter near him.

Charlie lands quite a few inches away from the laid out body.  Mustering up the courage, he takes a few steps towards it, pausing and clenching his little wings.  The thought of having to touch it made him shudder.   As he leans back, not wanting to get any closer than he has to, he inspects, poking it with one claw just to make sure it was truly dead.  He lowers his body now, opening his beak to snatch it back up by its tail.  In doing so, he feels a pair of glaring eyes meet his instantly.

The mouse had played dead!?  The creature leaps up, startling Charlie as he scrambles and falls backwards.  His feet kick and push at the ground as he tries to propel himself backwards and away from the rodent that stalks him, baring its two front fangs.   Charlie hops up and runs frantically from it in one direction, out of view and then comes back in the opposite direction, the mouse still trailing behind him.

Panning up above, little Max rocks back a bit on his bottom, his eyes glazes over as he pops one piece of fruit after another in his mouth.  His little belly now bloated from eating so much fruit.

Back down below, Charlie stumbles across a broken branch and hurries to pick it up with his beak.  Thinking quickly, he takes one good hop around to face his predator.  Having enough, he waits for his opponent to make the first move.  The mouse revs up and makes a flying leap at him.  With his eyes closed, he takes one good swing, his head rotating all the way back as the mouse gets pelted across the sky.

Back above, Max looks down momentarily before bringing himself back upright when he sees the mouse fly up from below and drop down next to him.  One wing at a time, Charlie pulls himself back onto the branch, huffing and puffing.  Exhausted, he nods and waves his wing in annoyance toward the mouse for Max to retrieve; he had enough of this charade.

Max with a meek smile, scoops the mouse back up and hurries his little feathers out of the picture.  Charlie brings himself back over to his original setting and adjusts himself in a more comfortable stature.  Licking his beak, he turns to face a partially empty bark and half eaten fruit.  He jolts right up as his head swivels back.  In the distance, a silhouette of his little brother is seen flying off as far as he can.

  1. Fun story!

I think that Charlie does not need to tell Max (gesture to Max) that he will go down to get the mouse. He can look guilty about kicking the mouse off the branch and fly down to retrieve the it.

I like it better when Charlie flies down to get the mouse he is so afraid and disgusted by the dead mouse that he beats it with a stick- just to make good and sure it is truly dead.

    1. Thank you for your feedback! That's funny, I originally thought I should have him beat the mouse, but I didn't. Now I definitely will add it in!
